New York Comptroller Tom DiNapoli is putting residents on notice about a lottery scam.
DiNapoli says the offer involves mail containing fraudulent checks that appear to have been issued by New York State.
He says the scammers have been sending potential victims a letter telling them that they are a winner of a lottery or sweepstakes drawing and that they need to wire money in order to secure the "full winnings."
DiNapoli notes any money wired to the scammers can not be retrieved.
He's urging any residents who receive one of the fraudulent checks, to report it to his office.
The City of Ithaca paid $86.5 million in claims not listed on a warrant and cannot be sure all moneys owed to it are collected and deposited properly according to an audit by the New York State Comptroller.
